Sure is strange. Sounds like a rib/stringer
that may have been stressed for years has final given in and thus broken.
Loose cables causing some flutter could be the problem, maybe the elevator being
out of balance due to some outside difficulties, too. How about a pic or
two? Keep us posted as to the progress. Maybe someone has an
elevator hanging around if yours is too far gone.

Do they follow any rivet lines, or are they random? I've never heard of the elevator skin just cracking like that.

----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]----Our beloved Harry (N93929) is grounded right now; both the upper and lower skins on the elevator have begun cracking. The suspicious part, to me, is that it is all on the left side.
Right now my chief suspects are the trim tab (opposite side) and the possibility of the elevator cables not being quite as tight as they should be. Has anyone had a similar problem or any ideas about why cracks would suddenly appear on one side? I say suddenly because 5 cracks, 2 on top and 3 on bottom, ranging from ½ to 2 ½ appeared in less than 10 hours operation.
