The black stuff on the bottom is oil and dirt. Engine oil that is. Photo
looks much worse than it is. When we flew it home it burnt lost or used 1
quart every 2 hours. Engine now has been overhauled. The whole belly of
the aircraft was covered with oil.

The corrosion that Paul eluded to is on the quarter rib aft of the rear
spar on the inboard edge of the pilot side walkway. It is around the hole
that the Pitot tubes run through. I am going to change that quarter rib.
The task does involve drilling out several rivets. In retrospect I could
have lived with it as there were no structural issues and it was limited to
a half inch around the hole but I needed to be sure that there were no
other issues. Had to drill out rivets to get better visibility. Peace of
mind was another big driver. I am pretty conservative in my approach hence
the job creep on the project. Professionally I have to be conservative. I
guess it spills over. Also the old adage, " there are old pilots, and there
are bold pilots, but no old bold pilots" tends to come to mind many times.

Now that the inspection is done we can start putting it back together. I am
going to install a split elevator.

Cheers. . ...Varun
