About a month ago I posted some questions concerning cracks I had found in the elevator skin. After reading through the many replies, suggestions, and offers of parts; here is what we found:
After opening up the elevator, we found evidence of a bend in the middle of the elevator that had been repaired by simply “unbending” it. We suspect this method of repair may have lead to some unusual stress in the skin, which accompanied by various vibrations over the last 20 or so years finally caused the cracks.
We found other evidence of some sort of rear end collision that had been repaired. It all is beginning to look like the plane was probably backed into a hangar wall at some point in its life and some of the repairs just weren’t that good.
Repairs have been made using an elevator from a wreck I bought and Harry is back in the air.
Thanks to everyone who offered ideas and parts.
Tommy
