It is my understanding that the difference is because in a car, the engine is operated at high power levels only briefly (compared to the whole time the engine is on), while an aircraft engine is operated at high power almost all the time.

Subject: [COUPERS-TECH] Air cooled aircraft engines vs. air cooled auto engines

----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]----

Gang,
I am puzzled about the difficulties experienced with air cooled engines
in aircraft and
yet when air cooled engines are used in autos, I don't know of as many or
as serious
problem being incurred as frequently. Perhaps they occur, but as most in
aircraft are
air cooled and many fewer are used in autos.
Volkswagons have had a favorable experience with air cooled engines.
They are
typically ridden hard and put up wet.
