Fred,

The Ercoupe Service manual, in the Nose Landing Gear chapter
(page 40) it mentions the fluid level in the green area on the gauge with
the aircraft in the static position.  Sorry you are missing that gauge;
however the fluid mark on my gauge is seven inches down from the top. You
could use some other device to insert in the filler hole to get this
measurement but be sure it is clean, and DON’T let it drop inside the strut!
Also on the same page your total fluid amount for servicing the nose strut
is 1.5 pints of fluid.

Yes, your strut can be filled without the strut being fully
extended. Because the orifice plate is already immersed in the fluid, to
ensure an accurate reading you must “exercise” the nose strut by lowering
the tail a bit then letting the weight compress the strut again. Do this a
few times and take another reading.

Be careful on overfilling. Too much fluid will squirt out the
vent holes located at the top of the strut every time the strut compresses
on landing. You will find quite a mess inside your engine compartment; your
generator will be soaked with hydraulic fluid plus whatever else the airflow
in your engine compartment will carry.

Your strut extension on the ground (static) is determined by the
internal taxi spring inside the nose strut. That and aircraft weight will
determine this extension. My extension is slightly less than three inches
(2.75) with an empty weight of 920 lbs.

Hope this helps along with other replies from fellow members,
have fun with this endeavor and any other questions you have please visit

Subject: [COUPERS-TECH] Original nose struct

I have a question for the group. I would like to add fluid to the nose
struct and the manual says to tie down the tail allowing the struct to
extend and add the oil through the top. It also mentions using the cable
gauge to determine when the struct is full. In my plane the cable no l
onger has any markings for the filling? Also the original manual did not
show the restricter cable which keeps the struct from extending to its full
length. Can it be filled with the cable, or does it have to come off? How
much fluid should I add? The manual says the extender tube should extend in
normal position three inches and mine at present is a little over two
inches. Fred Fowler.
