The air intake needs to be a little away from the front cowling because you 
don't want the cowling rub against the sharp inlet scoop.
The cowling would just chafe? through.
Also I am pretty sure that the gap you see on ground is smaller when the plane 
is in the air.

Don't fix it if it aint broken.

Fellow coupers, 
     The carb air intake doesn't exactly line up with the hole on the front 
cowl, leaving about 1/4' space or more on one side where the air could enter 
the engine compartment unabated .  Do you think this is normal production 
tolerances or the result of a mishap?  Is this something I should investigate?
