Darick. The air intake needs to be a little away from the front cowling because you don't want the cowling rub against the sharp inlet scoop. The cowling would just chafe? through. Also I am pretty sure that the gap you see on ground is smaller when the plane is in the air. Don't fix it if it aint broken.
