I think you are right...normal for some clearance.... Ercoupe Service Manual Book says a minimum of 1/16 inch clearance... page 43 item # 6.. Mine had been bent sometimes in the past, and with a fibreglas nose bowl , it had over 1 1/2 inch clearance. This, I thought was too much, pressurizing the lower cowl. I added a rubber seal around the intake to solve this problem.
