We went through this a few months ago and although I've never seen it, there does seem to be an STC for an O-200 in an Ercoupe that does not require you change the model to a D. If you can find it, go for it! If you;re looking at an airplane with this mod that is still classified as a CD, look very hard at the paperwork, specifically the STC installation instructions.
And for many of those new or soon to be Sport Pilots out there that are looking at owning the finest little flying machine ever made, be sure to investigate all the logs AND the FAA Document CD ROM to see if the plane was ever a D model that has magically slid back to C or CD due to missing log book pages.
