Hey Larry, As Dan said, the first inspector was right and the second was
wrong. All He/she/you have to do is look at the type certificate (Aircraft
Specification no. A-718). Paragraph I under Engine states "See items....
and 110 for optional engines." Paragraph 110. Reads:
Engines
12 lb.
Continental C-85-12 or -12F
Engine limits for all operations: 2575 r.p.m. (85hp.)
(Eligible with item 1(c), 3, 4, 6, 7, or 8 propeller only)
Eligible on model 415-CD; eligible on model 415-C provided the following
are accomplished:
(a) Modifications specified under item 106 for installation of C-75 engine.
(b) Wide elevator trim tab (1-3/8 in chord) installed per Erco dwg.
415-22031 or narrow trim tab (3/4 in, chord) installed per
Erco dwg. 415-22027 (or item 401).
Note: Conversion of continental C-75 engine to C-85 must be
accomplished in accordance with Continental Service Bulletin M47-16,
dated 6-7-48 and the oil sump dip stick recalibrated to indicate full when
sump serviced with 4.5 qt. oil.
So there really is no problem. As long as there is no paperwork stating
conversion to a 415-D, you are good to go. I would spend the $7.00 or so to
order
the CD from the FAA for the N number of the Ercoupe. Carefully read every
document to ensure that there has been or will be no surprises, and then have
the Coupe inspected by a knowledgeable mechanic (Pre buy).
Good Luck with everything.
