My coupe has had the center tank removed and is set up to operate from both wing tanks. This was done by a previous owner and I have checked the system as per information in the 337 done when the modification was completed and all operates satisfactory. The system works great for me as all my flights are of short duration.
Bill: If the caps are not vented, how does air get into the tanks to replace the fuel burned? Absent any more information, Id say you are risking your life flying with the vents plugged. I suspect the left tank cap is not sealing correctly (or incorrectly, depending on your perspective) and the engine is pulling fuel from there as it flows much better than the right tank which is still unvented. To solve your other issue, you should look into restoring the original in-tank gauge which will better show the low fuel level. The cap/gauge cannot detect fuel below the ½ level due to the dihedral of the wing. The caps should be interchangeable between the tanks, so that brings into question the difference between the two.
