All,
the center section AD was a result of that Ercoupe that was given to an
Airframe and powerplant class for practice.
That Ercoupe was heavily corroded out of negligence I heard. And this was the
reason to be donated to the class.
However, the folks made alarm and we had an almost instant AD.

I think the Center Section AD was a good thing after all. We found one corroded
rib in my aircraft in a location where it would have been undetected.
That corrosion could have grown and could have affected the rear spar.

The same can not be said for the service bulletin for ultrasounding the rivets.
It is totally nonsense and does not put into account the reasons for that crash.

Moreover I like to add that while ultrasounding rivets does not hurt, aside the
costs, the ignorance of the driving forces of that bulletin leads away from the
real causes of that accident.

Instead of x-raying rivets, one should emphasize the danger of aerobatic
maneuvers to the airframe. Second would be to remind everyone about the loading
limits of an Ercoupe.
We had a plane that was flown over gross in aerobatic maneuvers. That lead to
the accident. Not corrosion in rivets.

With that bulletin in place one might come to the conclusion that since his
plane passed the rivet test, he can keep overloading and overstressing his
plane.

Someone stop me please. I am getting upset again.

  Dan,

Would you please check the timeline? (I've got to be out till afternoon
tomorrow.) My fuzzy memory agrees with Oliver that the center section
inspection AD came before the aerobatics crash.

I *think* I remember that the aerobatic crash did bring about the
"mandatory" (only for commercial operations) service bulletin for ultrasound
inspection of the center section rivets.

  Hi Oliver,
There was an AD that required inspection plates be installed in the center
section, OR removal of the wings, and inspection of the center section
  every three years.

There was also a service bulletin (not mandatory) to have an ultrasonic
testing done on the main spar rivets.

  Best regards,
  Dan
