For what it's worth, Lycoming issued a Service Bulletin recommending their engines not be started without preheat below 20ºF which sounds like a fine guideline. Does anyone know Continental's position on this? For my part, I don't start if the engine core temp is below 20 and I use a cover on the hole under the prop (before it was painted: the cover pictured) - the oil is much warmer when it gets below 40:
