Kevin:

The U-joint from Univair is a modified (shortened) MS20271-B10. Univair does
NOT drill or ream the holes for the taper pins. You drill them and they
must be reamed with the matching parts for the correct fit.

Skyport sells the MS part for the same price as Spruce. You must shorten at
least one end or it will mess up the elevator stop.

The shim cannot be installed without disassembling the nose gear. It also
provides a thrust bearing surface to help limit wear to the collar. The
specified tolerance is .002 - .003, IIRC, but the laminations are .005, so
you can only get so accurate... IIRC, the shim is .050 thick.

So, what is it your Ercoupe is wondering about? ;)

Subject: [ercoupe-tech] Re: Yoke Universal Joint

The reason I ask is I have a wondering Ercoupe. There is a lot of play
in the nose steering which is making it hard to keep it going in a
straight line. Some is from the universal joints but there seems to be
a lot from the nose strut collar/sleeve. I can move this collar/sleeve
up and down about .025 inches. What is the amount of play that is
normal here? It looks like there is a shim there that is worn. Looking
at the parts book it looks like this shim is part number 34051. Does
this sound correct? Does anyone know how thick this is. It is called
Washer - laminated - steering sleeve spacer.

Thanks,
Kevin
