If you are looking for a place to spend your money, you can spend more and get a better result by spending it on noise canceling headset(s). If that isn't
enough, you can send the surplus to me!

When I did my rebuild, I applied sound deadening material like this http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/dampingpanels.php on the Firewall. The effect seems to be marginal. The noise seems to come from the wind shield itself and nothing one can do to mitigate the noise level here.

But for what it's worth, applying that stuff to the firewall does not do harm either. It keeps the heat away in summer. It also does not weigh much and can be removed fairly easy, so go and spend your money. :-)

Since I'm getting rebuilt wing tanks, as most airplane projects go, it leads to other things. Has anybody added sound deadening material directly to the aluminum skins, behind the interior upholstered side panels? Maybe the trade off between reduced decibels and added weight is not enough to justify it. I was just looking in an industrial supply catalog for other items (as part of my job, NOT airplane parts) when I came across sound deadening material, and wondered if there is an equivalent aircraft grade?
