Thanks, David. My 'Coupe came with a Stromberg carb, but no separate
manual mixture control at all. Some on the list have encouraged me
to get one added; if I do, I am sure that your epiphany will save me
a lot of difficulty.

  An epiphany.

Some time back, we had an exchange concerning how difficult it could be
to "lean out" the Ercoupe mixture above 5K ft. I could not understand
what was so tough about the task, because on my bird, it seems a snap.
Just slowly twist out the mixture until you begin to get an RPM drop,
then twist it back in a touch till the rpms return.

What I did not, then, understand is that most 'Coupes do not have a
vernier mixture control. You must tug it or push it. That is to say,
the mixture knob CAN'T be "twisted" in or out. That fine, slow
control is the key. Without it, you just tend to kill the engine.

(My bird is getting overhauled and the A&P suggested that I replace my
vernier model with a standard push-pull number. That is how the light
finally dawned on me.)

So, bottom line, what I have learned is that the vernier control is the
simple key to the job. I now pass it along.

(A vernier control generally costs, I am told, about $80.)
