Perhaps you're right, Dan. I did an unusual (for a Coupe owner) amount of
high altitude cross country flying.

When I fly, I often like to go places.

And, I have a strong tendency toward motion sickness (mostly cured by
learning to fly) that makes me prefer being above the thermal layer in the
silky-smooth air. Cross country trips up there may be boring, but they
don't make me want to heave. Also, from 10,000'-12,000', if you were to
have any engine problems you would get to choose which airport you want to
land on in "flyover" country.

And, the fuel savings at 2400 rpm and below can be dramatic. Getting high
and leaning the engine can increase your range so much (with controlled
human liquid intake) that you can skip a fuel stop on a long cross country
trip and save an hour to two hours time along with the money.

Westerners, where there are high altitude airports and where the
7,000'-10,000' scenic things are rocks, not clouds, can benefit from having
a working mixture control for climb. Also, the fuel stops tend to be
farther apart west of Omaha.

And for John Brier, as far as I've heard, Marvel Schebler carbs are about
the same as Stromberg carbs except they react a bit faster to changes in the
mixture control.
