I also fly as high as possible when traveling cross country. That has saved my bacon more than once. I accumulated most of my time in cross country and mountain flying using aeroclub airplanes. Many times ADs that were supposed to have been done weren't and things happened. Leaning the fuel mixture extended the time before refueling and saved money. WHen one lives in Colorado springs, the base altitude is approximately 6400 ft so leaning on start up especially in the summer is a normal routine. Now I am at sea level and it isn't necessary.
