Hey Kevin: I agree that it is a tight fit, but with almost 5000 put out by  
the factory, it is a doable task. They certainly did not "ding" the gas tank. 
    First, I would ask which fittings are you using?  Aluminum is no longer 
legal (because of the AD for the gascolator braces).  Second, are you trying to 
screw the gascolator on the fitting, or put the whole  assembly back in place 
after it has been put together.
    You may need a slightly longer extension in the  elbow to get the 
gascolator out far enough to clear the oil tank. I have seen  one or two where 
a 
slight turn downwards of the 90 degree fitting will give  enough room. However, 
you do have to either remove the oil tank or the  carburetor to put it all 
together.
