Folks, What is required for certifications on transponders and encoders for a VFR-only aircraft? I know the transponder has to be checked every two years. Do the regs say that the encoder has to be checked at several altitudes? Only if flown in certain airspace? If so, which reg is it? Somebody is telling me that the encoder does not have to be checked for correct altitude readout if the airplane is not flown IFR. I find that hard to believe.
