I'd normally expect the water level to go up by about 10% of the gasoline
quantity.

 

So, if I had one inch of water and four inches of gasoline, I'd expect the
"water" level to go up by .4 inches.

 

Just how much water you need, I can't easily specify.  I'd start with about
water at about 1/5th of the jar as a WAG.
