I understand the KISS principle of keeping it simple, but it is, I
think, part of the standard recovery procedure for increasing airspeed /
descending altitude situation.

 

And, Ercoupes do pick up speed quickly in a descent.  You want to avoid
overstressing the wings (on sixty year old aircraft) if possible.

 

You are right on though about the futility of adding power going
straight up / better to push the nose over as soon as you recognize what
is happening:-)

Just trying to keep it simple. I don't think you will boomer the mach 
going straight down in an Ercoupe power on or power off.
Same thing if going straight up. Adding power won't do a lot for you.
