Glen -

You can make such a change under three circumstances:

1. If the Type Certificate Data Sheet (TCDS) allows it; or

2. If there is an STC that allows it; or

3. If you can get your FSDO to approve the change via a Form 337.

Your A&P will have to work with the FSDO, prior to the change, if you go by
option #3, so that you don't spend the money to do the change, only to have
it rejected by the airworthiness inspector at the FSDO.

Getting a copy of a past 337, from someone who has done the modification,
and gotten proper approval often goes a long way to getting yours approved.

  Subject: [ercoupe-tech] exhaust question

I need an opinion from those familiar with the regs.

If a 415D has the original style exhaust system, with the muffler against
the firewall and one exhaust stack exiting the bottom of the cowling, can
you LEGALLY remove that system and install the duel exhaust system found on
the Alons, the one that has two "straight pipes" coming down each side of
the engine with two exhaust pipes exiting the lower cowling, one on each
side?
