Glen - You can make such a change under three circumstances:
1. If the Type Certificate Data Sheet (TCDS) allows it; or 2. If there is an STC that allows it; or 3. If you can get your FSDO to approve the change via a Form 337. Your A&P will have to work with the FSDO, prior to the change, if you go by option #3, so that you don't spend the money to do the change, only to have it rejected by the airworthiness inspector at the FSDO. Getting a copy of a past 337, from someone who has done the modification, and gotten proper approval often goes a long way to getting yours approved.
