Maybe the ERcoupes differ slightly here by serial number, but in mine , serial
number 3955, I was able to get the column out.

It requires a lot of cursing and moving the column around as much as possible
to get the best fit. When you find the right angle, you will wonder why you did
not before, it seems so easy then.

I agree with what Lynn said. The lower bakelite bushings in these columns need
to be oiled at least every 100 hours. I doubt that any Ercoupe had this service
over all these years. The result is a worn lower bushing. Skyport used to have
a replacement bushing.

I wonder if the dye check AD still applies to the control column.

Subject: Re: [ercoupe-tech] Removing Control Column

Hey Bob: The answer is to cut the floor bulkhead and bend it rearward to
allow the control column to be removed. If you cut the bulkhead (which is not a
major support item except for the floor) at the two holes cut through it (one
for wiring on the right and one for the brake lines on the left) and bend it
rearward about an inch, you will be able to remove the control column. Once you
put the control column back, all you have to do is make a couple of supports to
hold the floor bulkhead back in place (angle pieces under the bulkhead work
very well). These supports can be held in place with screws, so if you ever
need to remove the control column again, it is a simple matter.
OBTW when you have the control column out, check it carefully for wear. I
have found many of them with too much play in the vertical direction. Some also
have worn the lower bushing and/or the column itself and end up with fore and
aft movement. These movements will cause nose wheel shimmy, and/or too much
play in the controls.

Group: Although I follow the discourse on the tech page with interest,
this is my first query. We are essentially rebuilding Ercoupe 415-CD, Serial
4787, N94676 which started with an annual in April and is still going strong,
and I'm not sure about any end being in sight. We would like to remove the
control column to better inspect and adjust the chain drives and to install
and align new hardware out to the control wheels. Question: Does anyone know
if the control column can be removed by orienting it in some manner so it will
clear the major frame member just forward of the spar? This without removing
the header tank or the panel. We have come to within one inch of our goal, but
so far no cigar. Does anyone know of anyone who has accomplished this feat?
Maybe its not possible. We would appreciate any help or guidance. Thanks
much.
