if a mechanic worked on same airplane for 25 years he or she
should be able to talk shop with Wrights and Dunlap. i don't
think we are getting the whole story on mechanic's side. if i
had to guess the mechanic working on aircraft that pay him more
and he out grew the Ercoupe class of aircraft. would you take
your 1947 Chevy into Chevy dealer ship or would you find some
one that specializes in that vintage automobile that's just how
business world works.

Prof Ed and others,
I once asked a mechanic for pricing on an annual inspection which he answered
with some base price plus an hourly rate for repairs. I then asked about owner
assisted and he increased his base price by $100.
He said the price increase was to put up with me, fix what I break, and take
extra time to explain stuff and answer my second guesses. Why don't you do this?
We've all had "customers from hell". Even Southwest Airlines has asked
customers not to fly with them anymore, "You are not worth the trouble".
Danger! danger! Generalization time:
It has to be hard to make any money doing mechanic work on Ercoupes. Parts are
expensive, most aircraft are old and poorly maintained, and most owners are too
cheap to fix it right.
mitch - a real cheapskate.. .drive $500 car...where is #1 cylinder...

Does this mean you have to hire a new mechanic and give him(her)
twenty-five years of OJT?

Importance: Low
Well: You at least have to applaud his honesty.
However; he could have continued to do the work and paid you for the
learning experience! :-)

Wayne,
After 25 years of keeping my previous aircraft
in mechanically perfect condition my mechanic has fired me.
I quote him. "I don't want to do any more work or annuals on your plane.
I feel ashamed to be charging you for my time in learning about your
plane.
So please take it to someone else who is familiar with Ercoupes."
He felt embarrassed in charging me for his learning curve time.
