Rob,

The 415C is listed by the FAA as being compliant with light sport
and does not require an STC to be flown by a Sport Pilot. There is
an STC available to raise the gross weight of the 415C to 1320 lbs.
(maximum for a Light Sport Aircraft) from 1260 lbs. without removing
it from the light sport category (availabe from Skyport). I think
that an STC O200 conversion is in the works by Skyport. You can also
upgrade to O200 crankshaft in the C85 engine with an existing STC
and get most of the horses of the O200 engine with probably less
hassle. The horse power rating of the engine in a light sport
aircraft is not a limiting factor. The light sport aircraft
limitations for the land (not sea) category are:

maximum 1320 gross weight
maximum 120 knot continuous cruise at sea level (Vh)
maximum 45 knot stall speed clean
fixed gear
fixed or ground-adjustable prop
singe engine (reciprocating)
non-pressurized cabin
seating for no more than two including the pilot
