All,
There is a process called selective brush  plating. We repair hydraulic 
cylinders and often have to repair dings in the chrome rod.
See if there is a place in your area that does "brush Plating" (not cosmetic) 
or hydraulic cylinder repair.
They may be able to plate your cylinder back to standard diameter in the worn 
area.
Does not cause hydrogen imbrittlement.

It moves in all directions, Hartmut. I believe Opal and I will haveto rebuild 
the strut and sleeve/collar completely. I checked priceson Univair:415-31080 - 
strut cylendar 601.30415-34029 - steering collar 172.59415-34057 - sleeve 
512.70Can check for used parts, but they would be try/match/send back
