I've got an O-200 in my Coupe, and in the last 1500 hours I've replaced the
electric pump three times. It seems to help pump life to turn it off
immediately when the main tanks go dry and the fuel pressure light goes on.
Trying to stretch and get the last few drops of fuel seems to accelerate the
pump wear and failure. I now carry a spare electric pump with me, and had
to have one changed out at Grants Pass OR, on the way from CNO in SoCal to
Arlington WA.

I have not experienced the failure modes that you or Paul described.
