Keep in mind that one of the functions of our oil is engine cooling. I am in
the automotive lubrication business, and one of the directives put out by the
Society of Automotive Engineers, is that in a 5 qt. automotive system, if you
are running around with your engine 1qt. low, you have already lost over 50% of
the cooling capacity of your oil. Heat is oil's worst enemy. The hotter it
gets, the closer you are to reaching the shear point of your oil.

An aircooled engine is put together with different tolerences than our
automotive engines, but certain principals still stand. That is, you want a
certain temperature to help hold the tolerences of the engine for best
performance, but after that temperature, it starts being your enemy.

Now, Does it make any sense to see how low of an oil level you can get by with?
Your temperature gage is only relative, and may not be accurate.

THE SENILITY PRAYER :
Grant me the senility to forget the people
I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do, and
the eyesight to tell the difference.
