Re: the possibility that it was a bad batch of aluminum...Would it be
useful for those who have had the problem to post their serial
numbers? Perhaps others with numbers close to those may want to be
especially vigilant...

Hartmunt,
I am afraid that I am not at all talented in documentation. I am
truly thankful that there are folks like you who are talented so us
computer "dolts" can get our chores done safely and efficiently.
Actually, if I had been able to document the project, it would have
been an exact copy of your web site except everything would be like
an old photo negative because my problem was on the left side instead
of the right side.
I suspect the bad aluminum theory is correct.
