Joe (and All),
I spoke with my mechanic about this, and he thinks the drip could
have been caused by a tiny bit of debris, caught in the mechanism and
blocking the valve from closing all the way. I did notice a bit of
debris when I did the gascolator fuel sample during pre-flight that
day; it was a trifle larger than coarse sand, and there were also a
couple of smaller ones, like fine sand. Having any debris at all is
unusual for my plane, so I noticed it and connected it to what the
mechanic later said. He cleaned around the area, did some other
work, then checked for a drip again but found it all clean. And when
I flew it again a week later, everything seems fine. But I, too,
will be watching this carefully. Maybe the moral should be: if
there's any debris particles at all in the gascolator fuel sample,
keep on checking until there isn't?

I've had the same gascolator leak issue on a brand-new airplane. I lost
15 gallons of fuel during a 1-hour flight. I now check the gascolator
first thing and last thing on my checklist.
I'm new to this group because I'm new to Ercoupe! I'm flying to Florida
Tuesday morning the 14th to pick up my new/old 1945 415C, which I'll be
flying back to Massachusetts on Thursday. I'll look forward to reporting
on a great flight. Meanwhile, I'll watch that header tank issue. Thanks
for the great info.
