Replacing 3 batteries in 4 years is a sign of something not being right with
your charging system.

Check your Voltage with a meter when flying - some handheld GPS have the option
to show the voltage, otherwise use a voltage meter.
I suspect your electric system is running at around 14 Volts. A high Voltage
like that will cook to death any battery - Gill , Concorde or the Lawn Mower
type.
Before changing to another battery, change to the alternator first or have the
generator looked after. Maybe the generator does not charge the battery enough?
A low charged battery can not withstand freezing temperatures. If it is cold
enough, the battery dies as well.

A good lead acid battery can live long. 3-5 years at a minimum, 20 years at the
max.

Looking over the current battery, the mechanics installed a G-35 and the
battery box does not have the wooden spacers. Keep in mind that would be
three different mechanics, maybe working off the first one’s improper decision?
Would a larger battery cause issues…i.e. not charge properly with a
C-85/Delco Generator.

Right now planning on ordering the Univair kit for battery box (wooden
spacers) and the Concord RG-25. The service bulletin says the RG-25XC is not
allowable?

Anyone install the Lightweight alternator STC by Classic Aero. Uses a “more
modern” 6lb 30A alternator? I think it runs about $900 for parts, but
wondering what the labor/install costs would be? Saw it on Barnstormers and in
Trade A Plane.

Also been looking at the Alpha STC for the upgraded electrical system…any
thoughts, comments on labor time to install?
Long term would like to be able to use night flight capabilities (have light
system) and maybe an in panel GPS/COM and electric Turn and Bank. But just
dreaming at this point. Seems like cold weather and limited good flying days
can cost more than when I just go flying!

I too have been plagued with battery problems with my Gill battery(s)! Three
in four years. Always seems to go bad in the winter, about every 18 months. I
am considering the Concord but not sure if it will be a direct replacement,
given the Univair SB says that there are differences in the connectors? Like
the idea of the sealed battery, anyone else tried the sealed battery Gill or
Concord? Currently have the butterfly bolt and washer to connect my Gill
battery.
