IMHO Let me preface this by saying no, I have never replaced an ERCOUPE rear
spar. I have however repaired the cabin section of many wrecked tube and
fabric planes and replaced the main spar carry thru on cherokees, commanches
and rebuilt the cabin section on a few cessnas. Don't know Mr. Wright but I
understand he is a very competent mechanic. All that being said, (we are
talking about the rear spar in the FUSELAGE aren't we) Yes a jig will be
required, but the jig can be the existing structure and wing. Any competent,
workman like A&P or IA with sheetmetal experience should be able to do the
repair. Look how many non mechanics have built fantastic homebuilts, and how
many people have restored antiques. It is a matter of your confidence in your
mechanic. He must understand the ramifications of installing the replacement
spar and keeping the plane in "rig". It would be real nice if he has another
coupe to take measurements from but not absolutely necessary. Don't lose hope,
while this is a pretty good undertaking, it ain't rocket science. Bill
