Mike,
I have had a similar problem in the past, however the problem was due to 
insufficient fuel being injected by the accelerator pump.  It is my suggestion 
that you observe the action of the accelerator pump while the carb is off of 
the engine.
Fill the carb bowl with fuel and actuate the throttle while observing the 
amount of fuel injected by the pump. Fuel should immediately flow as soon as 
you move the throttle lever.  Some time, the initial movement of the throttle 
does not result in any fuel being injected.  This results in a stumble due to 
an excessive lean mixture.  Usually, this is due to some leak back of the fuel 
into the carb bowl as a result of a leaking check valve in the pump circuit.
