Mike,

I've been reading your posts with interest. What you are describing might
be caused by fuel leaking into the intake spider through the primer. I know
you said you checked the primer, but maybe it is leaking internally and it's
not noticeable from a visual inspection. The reason that I suspect this is
that I once was riding in a Piper Cherokee that began running rough at idle
and
at low power settings, and advancing the throttle quickly would almost kill
the engine. Turned out that the primer was not in and locked, and fuel was
being sucked out of the primer line and into the intake system. Locking the
primer fixed it.

It would be interesting to disconnect the primer line that goes from the
firewall to the intake manifold, cap off the firewall fitting and the primer
line, and then do some testing to see if the problem goes away. If it does,
then you have a primer leaking internally.

Your description of the problem makes it sound like the mixture is too rich
at idle, and advancing the throttle makes it even worse, due to the
accelerator pump shooting a stream of fuel into the intake. Maybe the extra
fuel is
coming from the primer.

Maybe something to investigate. Let us know what you find!
