Tom,

It's great that you now have a Coupe for training purposes.

Questions for general information and so I can give intelligent referrals:

1a. Is your trainer equipped with rudder pedals?
1b. If so, does it have the ERCO linkage with ground steering done via the
yoke or
does it have the ALON linkage with ground steering done via the
pedals?

2. Figuring a one hour reserve and one hour of fuel for a training flight,
the empty weight of the plane and the weight of the CFI (you), what's the
max weight of the student? (Or, maybe keep the entire nose tank as a
reserve like most of us do.)

3. Are you also licensed to give PP training through to completion?

4a. Most CFIs seem to have a preferred DPE. How much does your favorite
DPE weigh? How heavy a pilot candidate can go for a checkride with that
DPE?
4b. Do you have an alternate DPE who's especially light weight?

5. Do you have affordable accommodations for students who might come for a
two or three week intense course?

It's been about 30 years since I spent part of a day in LeMars. Pretty
town.

I flew my Coupe for 23 years with rudder pedals. They are a nuisance as you
have to push them a fair amount to just match what the inter-linkage does
automatically. Still, they keep you aware of using feet and, for a trainer,
prevent your students from getting an Ercoupe-only license. And, they
cramped my knees on long flights.

I could get some effective slip to lose a moderate amount of extra altitude
on final using the pedals at max slip. I found I could land wing-low with
the fuselage aligned with the runway in up to about a 15 mph direct
crosswind, using the pedals to slip. (In crosswinds stronger than 15 mph,
I'd just level the wings and land in a crab like any self-respecting
Ercoupe.)

For a trainer, I'd recommend pedals. For anyone else, not.

Hope you get lots of students!

(Please be sure to send your response to the forum, not to me.)
