In the days of prop jobsĀ  With Navy fighters the canopy was open for all
takeoffs and landings.
The Navy knew that in case of an (EMERGENCY) crash into the sea the pilot
had a better getting out. Most fighter aircraft adopted this procedure (on
land based operations too). With the new bubble type, jettison procedures are
used.
During the "Battle of Britain" many pilots opened their canopy during dog
fights in case they had to get out quickly. The Royal Air Force frowned on
this tactic. It would not do any harm to open our windows during a coupe
emergency, especially a water landing. For that matter after thinking about it,
I
may consider doing all my take offs and landings as a precaution with
windows down (unless it's too damn cold). I believe most accidents happen
during
landings? Either way I certainly would put it on my EMERGENCY check list if
it makes you feel better. As far as "Kicking" I know I'm not agile enough to
execute that sort of contortionist maneuver.
