Imagine the air flowing over the elevator and trim tab.......If the tab is 
down, the air flow pushes the elevator up. Elevator up, nose up..  If the tab 
is neutral, the air flow has no effect.
 
 
Now, the trim lever and wire attachment may be installed incorrect, or possibly 
made incorrect, so that the trim tab works backward on your coupe. 
 
If the lever is pivoted in the middle of the lever, and wire attached to the 
bottom of the lever, then the trim works properly...move lever back ( nose up), 
the  wire moves forward and moves tab down.
 
If the lever is pivoted on the bottom and the wire aattached to above the pivot 
point, then the wire moves forward with the forward movement of the 
lever....causing the tab to move down.
 
Originally the trim (on early Coupes), there was no trim tab. The elevator 
control was activated by cables and a spring. The wpring was attached to a 
cable that was activated by a crank on the panel. turn the crank CW, and this 
increase pressure on the spring, lifting the elevator., resulting in nose -up ( 
just like pulling on the control column.)
 
This was changed to a trim tab, which is effective, even if the older system 
failed due to a broken spring, etc, loosing all elevator control.

OK , I might have read something in your reply that hits the nail on the head. 
Did I understand you to say that........ when the trim tab on the elevator is 
moved DOWN , it makes the nose go up ? If that were right  that would solve it. 
I have never moved it down (which would be pushing the lever forward in the 
cockpit ).It was siezed when I purchased it and after fixing the cable I was 
experiencing the nose down problem .I have never flown with the tab lower than 
the stop.I thought that the airplane would nose over more as you moved the trim 
tab lower.

Carefully re-read Lyn's msg... The trim tab must move downward to lift the 
elevator upward..

S be careful to observe that when the trim lever is in the full up position, 
the trim tab is in the full 45-60 degree downward position.

My cable is alright and I just lubed it. I did notice that the stop for the 
trim tab does'nt seem te allow for any up trim . With the trim in the full up 
position the tab is level with the elevator. Should'nt there be some travel up. 
If so ,how much and how do I adjust it . Could the stop be the wrong one.

Hey Nick: The first thing to do is to make sure that the trim tab is moving 
through its full amount of travel.
Push the trim control handle to the full forward position and check that the 
tab is level with the elevator. Then pull the trim control handle to the full 
aft position and check that the tab is now down about 60 degrees down (more 
than 45). If the tab movements comply approximately with those numbers, double 
check your weight and balance to make certain that the empty CG is within the 
25.2 to 25.8 inches prescribed in the TCDS. If those are both in sink, look at 
the trailing edge of the elevator. If it is bent down, this adds additional 
down trim and may need to be changed. You will need to fly the airplane again. 
With the trim control full aft, you should be able to glide at approximately 70 
MPH ( a little less is just fine)
    I am assuming you will find that most likely the trim tab is not operating 
through its full range. This is generally caused by corrosion in the trim wire 
housing inside the horizontal stabilizer. I have found this on most of the 
Ercoupes I have worked on. Some I was able to loosen it up by spraying a good 
dose of liquid wrench, followed by lots of WD-40 or other similar penetrating 
lubricant, on as much of the wire housing I could access by removing the tail 
cone. Others required removal of the housing and replacement (I would usually 
replace the trim wire and housing if I had to go to these efforts). You may 
also be able to lubricate the wire by loosening its attachment at both ends and 
pulling it out about 3 feet. Then applying light grease to the wire before 
pushing it back into place and re fastening it.

Wow ! What a glorious morning and wonderful flight.72 degrees light overcast , 
clear as a bell.This was the first time I got to fly the coupe since I flew her 
home on a wing and a prayer . Been working on her for 4 months.ASI is about 30 
mph high but that will get changed. My Garmin 196 was right on. The little 
coupe flew majestically. I tell people she is the Metropolitan of the skys.Us 
old guys remember that little car. I love flying with an open cockpit. 
  I do have one major concern .!! With the trim all the way in ( tab up against 
stop ) cruise speed , level flight , I can let go of the yoke and she DIVES 
like a STUKKA. What tha......... .That aint right!!!!!!! !   What can it be 
???? How do I fix it?
