Seems to me one could design a similar "latch" that would rivet into the "rib" that is perpendicular to the
cowling and thus not have to disrupt the paint on the cowling. ??

I have in the past reluctantly used a plastic coated clamp on the rear end to hold the cowl open - it's barely ok if there is no wind (the clamp holds the tail of the hinged part to the stationary piece up near centerline) - crappy solution, but beat getting my FLYING HAT (or hair, such as it is) greezy
