What's wrong with the original style exhaust system?

Some time back I think there was a discussion about this system having a cracking problem. I have searched for the info but apparently do not have the correct words to make Yahoo spit out the info. I seem to remember something about installing a "spreader bar" to prevent the pipes from excessive vibration. I would appreciate any info or details you wish to share on this subject. Thanks, Bob D.
