Larry, The Oct 2008 issue of Coupe Capers has an article explaining the care
and maintenance of voltage regulators.
The most common problem with the charging system is dirty or sticking contacts
in the regulator. Most problems can be corrected by using a point file to file
the points. This is followed by a final cleaning with a piece of hard card
board. Match book covers work well for this.
Adjusting or repairing the points is not advisable as it will usually make
matters worse.
After looking for loose wires and checking the field switch, I would consider
looking at the brushes in the generator. NAPA would have new brushes if you
need them.
