Most of the sheet metal is 2024 alloy. 2024 is not weldable. Also, a lot of the sheet metal on a monocoque aircraft is structural, so the repairs have to be made using acceptable practices.
Heavily formed parts, like the nose bowl, are made from different alloys and often can be welded, but, unless you have an expert doing it, the weld can cause more cracking. Brazing and soldering type processes require some sort of overlapping joint and really wouldn't be suitable for crack repair. -- John Skyport East www.skyportservices.net
