I had my tank removed for repairs. When we replaced it I added one gallon at a
time to calibrate the stick with the tube.
My tank holds six gallons when done draining back to the wings. When three
gallons had been added the stick was about
1/8 inch visible in the tube. I placed a black ring around the tube - -
securing it with Super glue from my model airplane supplies - -
at each gallon up to six. (3-4-5-6) There had been a thread awhile back about
wing tanks - - - - I had the wing tanks off to inspect
the spars and when replace they were dry. Again I put one gallon at a time in
each tank - - waited a little bit - - (to even out) - -then
I took a dowel and marked it as fuel started to appear - -two gallons at a
time. Both wing tanks held eight and a half gallons each right to
the brim. 8.5+8.5=17 - - - -17+6=23. The placard on the plate around the
fuel shut off handle on the panel says 23 gallons total.
I had also made a calibrated dowel for the nose tank for backup.
Caution - - - If you use a dowel for checking you fuel - - - - the wing tanks
are not deep so the stick will be short - -short enough
to disappear into the tank!!! I made mine about three inches taller than the
tank.(stuck out above the tank 3 in.) I then drilled a hole
(perpendicular) at the top and inserted a large(3 or 4 in) cotter pin bending
just the very end of it to secure it in place. Leave the dowel
in the middle of the cotter pin so the assembly will not drop into the tank.

Subject: [ercoupe-tech] HEADER TANK GAUGE STICK
Has anyone measured the drop in the header tank fuel gauge stick versus
gallons? If I remember correctly, there's about four gallons left when the tip
of the stick disappears. Personally, I would like to know how much fuel I have
left if the fuel pump quits right down to a dry tank.
