BTW,  I am an A&P and I see many airplanes with the old pull type starter that
have been replaced because the old one was not working "properly" or was slow
to turn the engine over.  It has been my experience that the pull starters that
are adjusted properly give many, many years of trouble free, economical
service.  Most the the starters which are noisy or turn over slowly are due to
a worn starter clutch.  These can be had for about $250 and installed in less
than an hour.  This is far less than the cost of a new style
starter ($500+) and installation of the required parts.  There is a weight
saving to be gained with the new style starter but it is not much.
