Original Empty Weight for 415-G (per brochure) approx. 838 lbs.! This included the extra oil & baffles required for the C-85 (and the "benefit" of not ever having had terneplate or stainless tanks included).

Since then, take off 7 lbs. (aileron counterweights). Now add 11 lb. for McCauley Met-L-Prop plus transponder, radios, antennas, intercom, headsets, ELT, GPS, strobes

Of the rest...Rate of Climb, EGT, CHT, old (heavier) radios/gyros, sunshade, paint (how many coats?), metal wing covering?, dirt, upholstery, oversize (35A) battery, thicker plexi., bubble windshield, rotating beacon, tires with extra plies (or recaps).

You get the idea.

Prof. Ed,

Jealosy!!!!  I’ve only been down to that weight one small block of years in the last 40.  But, I’m on the way down, now, and hope to get there or lower.

In the mean time, I can’t think of any good reason why your G can’t lose 35 pounds or more.

I bet you have a panel full of heavy instruments that could be replaced with very light glass cockpit instruments.  I’d guess you have upholstery and carpet that could be lightened.

Has the belly been properly cleaned of all dirt?  My mechanic did that as part of each annual so he could inspect every square inch of the skin – but it kept it clean and light.

Is there more than one coat of paint?

How about a lighter starter, alternator, battery?

Money can replace a LOT of weight in aircraft.  And, if it’s electronically transferred, the weight of the money DOESN’T EVEN COUNT!

All the best to you and the other lurkers with heavy aircraft.

 Ed
