There are two types of filters out there. One is the Bracket Foam type filter.
These are recognizable by the 3 screws that hold these in the air filter box.
Then there is the original one that is called the fiber type. The fiber type
filter can be washed and cleaned and re-oiled.
This type of filter is used by those racing nuts, because they filter as well
as foam filter, but are able to let more air at a given time through than the
foam or paper ones do.

If you have a bracket filter, you want to replace the foam. Bracket strongly
recommends against washing the filters, because the foam can gum up and become
clogged.

If you have the fiber type filter, you can take the filter cartridge out, use
the Fram air filter cleaning kit pictured below or something similar to clean
and re-oil the filter.
I found that the cartridge likes to get stuck and the little handle on that
filter can not support the force needed to get the cartridge out. In those
cases it helps to press the filter from inside the air filter housing to get it
out. It helps to take off the whole air filter unit for easier
working.<http://public.bay.livefilestore.com/y1pT8t_328pN8PXkPpY_jSsQG43gmBVkoZLZV4BtcK9NWDxhV_X3pYdvvaqmCCVcyAD1YdQCUvjZIXG9DE8EZDzGQ/EFB.jpg?download>

The picture shows the Bracket filter to the left and the I think original
style filter to the right.

Good luck,

Subject: [ercoupe-tech] Air Filter question

Hi all, I just bought a very low time E model plane which has been a hangar
bunny for a number of years.
One of the last things I want to to before flying is to clean the air filter.
This is a circular air filter, same as in the parts and service manuals which
is fitted to a C85-12 with the stromberg carb.
Dumb question, but how do you get the air filter element out????
