There was a thread a few days back discussing air filter maintenance. I intended to respond, but apparently didn't. Here's my 2ยข.
There are 2 filters commonly found on Ercoupes. The "OEM" filter is a Donaldson Air-Maze filter. Maintenance consists of cleaning it with low pressure compressed air, or soap and water if it has become oil contaminated. The Air-Maze filter is installed dry and should be replaced every 3 years, 5 cleanings or 500 hours, whichever comes first. The Donaldson maintenance instructions are not widely known, so I'm posting them at the web site in my signature. The second is the Brackett filter. The Bracket uses a disposable, oiled foam element. The element must not be cleaned and must be replaced on condition or every 12 calendar months, whichever comes first. There are others, notably one by K&N, but I don't know much about them. I won't use a K&N on my vehicle because of dirt infiltration, but that concern is actually less critical in an aircraft application. Personally, I prefer the Brackett because it is easy and cheap to maintain. YMMV, -- John Cooper Skyport East www.skyportservices.net
