Bob: Put a DPST switch in the panel. One side provides ground for the solenoid coil. the other side connects the field wire of the generator to the regulator. Electrically, you splice the wire back together at the old switch location and cut it under the panel and route it through the switch. Practically, you'll probably want to replace it all together.
