James.
I bought my Coupe with the compass mounted on the window frame stabilizer bar.
It was the first thing that I removed. Whenever I got in or out of the Coupe I
would hit the compass, scratch the skin and arrived bleeding in my cockpit. Not
my type of flying.
You don't need a bubbly windshield to mount anything on that bar, since nothing
will protrude forward, where the bubble gives a bit room. The bubble is good
when you want your GPS sit on the dash board. Maybe that is worth the money and
efforts.
I ended up mounting my compass in the center of the dash board. It is little
affected by magnetic fields there and works nicely ever since. It is not a
vertical compass. I wanted one some time ago, but I read that they don't like
vibration which messes up the mechanism inside pretty soon. Since our Ercoupes
are sorta direct drive airplanes , I resisted the temptation.

Subject: [ercoupe-tech] Vertical compas

My "wet" compass began leaking so I had the seal replaced which worked for a
very short period of time. I'm considering a "dry" vertical compass and would
appreciate any and all suggestions. I have a 415-C and would like to move it to
a location that's easier to see; I've seen a couple here that are mounted on
top of the dash and a couple mounted on the stabilizer bar in the windshield.
I'm going to add the bubble windshield to my plane hoping that the extra room
will facilitate the move. Your help will be sincerely appreciated.
