Donald,
I returned a Lowrance GPS for the same reason: could not see it
adequately in sunlight. I have been very happy with the AvMap
GeoPilot; no problem seeing it in my 'Coupe, in sunny Southern Calif.
The standard form of aviation headset also made me very uncomfortable
(clamping & weight on my head). Ever since I changed to the Clarity
Aloft (an in-ear type, designed by an audiologist), I won't fly with
anything else. They are so light and unobtrusive that at first I'd
forget I was wearing it and try to get out of the plane without
taking it off!

Excellent suggestion Ed! Just put it on night mode and viewed it
next to the window in the house, but will sure try that in the ac
next time. Never thought of doing that, sure looks like it will work!
