I would find the cause for the leak first before thinking of replacing the tank.

A new tank might develop the same leaks if for example the tank is mounted
under tension. Or is subject to the same vibrations.

My experience is that tanks will leak after a while - there is no permanent
solution. Cracks develop. Pin holes and if left idle corrosion will kill them.

Subject: [ercoupe-tech] Fuselage Fuel Tank Replacement

All,

I'm looking for advice. My Ercoupe S/N 1963 had the original 5 gallon cowl tank
replaced with the aluminum tank (normally fitted to later models) in 1984 when
the stainless steel cowl skin was installed. About 4 years ago it began
leaking. John Wright, Jr., went over it and for the past 4 years it has not
leaked. Now it is leaking at the top front, and that is the cause of my fuel
smell.

I don't want to go through the work of pulling the tank and not have the fix
permanent. So I am considering replacing this tank. A new aluminum tank is
$1600, assuming I can actually find one.

So, from your collective experience, should I get another aluminum tank, try to
find a stainless tank, or what? I'm open to any solution as long as it's
possible and will last a long time.

Thanks!
